Something New

Something New
An interior designer recently asked me about creating a custom tapestry for a new home she is designing. My mind went to lots of ideas for the space but the first sketch I sent wasn’t quite right. It was something new that I hadn’t done before and the designer felt it wasn’t right for the space. She and I are talking about other ideas.
In the meantime, I decided to weave the tapestry I first suggested to her. It took most of the summer to weave and I’m very happy with the finished piece.
Inspiration
My husband and I have a few acres of woodland in upstate New York. No house or anything, just a nice place to take a hike and enjoy the seasons. During our hikes, I’m always surprised and delighted when I find beautiful, colorful wildflowers. I take pics to keep for inspiration which comes in handy when I’m designing a new piece.
Some Planning
The tapestry is made up of three individual panels that are woven together. Before I could start weaving I had to do some math calculations to find where to place openings in the center panel where the outer panels would be woven into. And, figure out how long to make the outer panels so they were long enough to weave around the center panel. Phew!
A little planning helped a lot with this tapestry. It took about six weeks to weave and another week to layout and weave the panels together then finish.
I used the warp strings to hang the whole tapestry from an apricot branch. I’ve used apricot branches for some of my other tapestries, Color My Day and Pulse 7, 8, 9. The color of the branch is a rich red, brown that looks beautiful with the Churro wool the tapestry is woven with.
